Wealth vs Satisfaction
Does the pursuit of wealth equals satisfaction?
A recent article by Daniel Pink, in yahoo finance really hits the nail on the spot. He wrote
“Today, we’re grappling with what I call the “abundance gap,†a widening gulf between material prosperity and overall satisfaction.â€
It seems that above a certain point of income or affluence, more money doesn’t increase overall happiness. It might surprise some of us to know, this certain point is rather LOW. In my own experience, I found this to be true.
In the organization I worked, where income is largely commission based, past a certain threshold, productivity tends to level off. A comfort zone. This phenomenon is rather common worldwide, gauging from talks by trainers and speakers from other countries . . . hmm. That is why motivational talks are so popular. Could it be, deep down inside, we are saying, “I don’t want more?†yet externally many have be conditioned to want more.
I believe, the crux of the matter is “man’s search for meaning“, that began since the beginning of time. Without a real meaning, man will never be truly satisfied. Without knowing the meaning GOD made each of us, man will always look for substitutes like fame and fortune and find it meaning-less once it is attained.
If not, then why so many of the Rich and Famous end up destroying themselves even after having everything they desired.
