The Parable of the Pipeline

The pipeline in this book refers to income sources. Would you rather keep on carrying water daily for income or build a pipe, and have money coming to you. Most would choose to build a pipeline. If you think about it, many businesses are built on this premise, including utility companies, toll highways, franchise owners.

In the book, if you can build one pipeline, you can repeat it to leverage your income. Good point about this little book is that it got me thinking about building different income sources or pipelines. Now, the key question I ask myself when I consider a business venture, “Can this business run, if I’m not there?” If not, then all I’m getting myself into is another job. I’ll be another person’s pipeline!

On the flip side, although the concept is simple (who has not heard about it), those who have tried building pipelines will tell you, it is hard work. The skill sets are very different and many run out of funds, and can’t complete the pipeline. It is ever more challenging to continue to work and build the pipeline at the same time.

Another gripe I have is the author advocates network marketing as a way to having multiple sources of income. Anyone who have been into network marketing will tell you the hours you spend talking to potential down-lines. Many MLM’s use books like this to convince you to join them. To building any business, there will be many sacrifices.

In summary, there are good points in this book. Apply the good, junk the rest.
