Estate Directory

Recently I was down with the flu. Although I’m better now, I felt like dying when it was at its worst. I’m sure you’ve have gone through something similar. It got me thinking about “what ifs.” What if this is the end of the road. What if you are called home? Does your spouse know where your assets are? I believe many don’t know.

In today’s world of divorce and marriage break-ups, many people hide stuff from their spouses. I bet you don’t know which bank or branch your spouse keeps an account with, not all of them at least. You don’t have to or want to tell your spouse what you own, but at least where you keep them. Or place the list of where you keep important documents like land titles, bank accounts, insurance policies with a lawyer or someone you trust.

If you have done so, I salute you. But what about passwords to your websites, hosting provider, e-mail if you have an online income stream? Did you leave that part out? I’m pretty sure, if you are making substantial money online, you would have thought about it, but if you just started off, I think most of us would have overlooked this.

I believe, most of us who are active online, sign up for all sorts of accounts everywhere. So I thought an Estate Directory might help. An Estate Directory is just a simple list or document that list down where your assets are kept. You can leave this sheet of paper somewhere everybody can locate it, in the event of an emergency. If you are a bit more security conscience, you can hide this list and carry a small card to point your spouse to it. It is a simple list and I think you can get started on it. Feel free to delete or add as much as you want.
