Creating Financial Change

thinkingI’ve written quite a number of articles that’s in a way related to how we think about spending money. I feel many people make choices that relates to their money without giving enough thought to it. I aim to give you a different point of view and perhaps provoke you to think about the way you spend your money in a different perspective. I hope that this will encourage you to make the necessary change. The recent article about choosing the coffee versus choosing a cup, cost of gadgets and growing your assets slowly all fall into this category.

What if you are convince with the points made but you have difficulty making the necessary changes. Or, you do change the things you are doing but then, under stress or emotional distress, go back to the old habits? How do you ensure, the change you want to make last? Experts all over talk about in order to make changes to our behaviors, changing the actions alone is not sufficient. Because will power alone won’t last.

What effect’s people’s action is actually their emotion. You feel good or bad about something and to do certain actions. However, it is our thinking effects your emotion. It goes like this. What you think about something, effects how you feel, and how you feel affects your action and thus your result. To change, your results, you have to change your thinking.

THINKING >> EMOTION >> ACTION >> RESULTS

For instance, using the example of choosing the coffee versus the cup. Let’s say that you usually go to Starbucks for a $5 cup of coffee. You want to cut down $5 coffee and go make your own. $5 a cup Starbucks coffee somehow satisfy a certain emotion in you. And behind that is a thought. It could be, you think that it is cool to be seen holding a $5 coffee. It could be you’ve told yourself, it won’t make a difference in your budget. Or you deserve it. Whatever the thinking is, your thoughts towards spending more for the coffee, is positive. In order to change your $5 coffee habit, you have to change the way you think about it

Instead of thinking you deserve it, you need to give yourself a better reason to cut back on expensive coffee. Perhaps not having the credit company hound you every month is a better reason to change. Or, by cutting back on latte, you can buy yourself a car using cash. You replace the the thinking you had with something better that is more positive. You’ll notice, immediately the changes to your action.

Try this, be aware of your thoughts. I did this myself recently. There is a certain action I needed to do, but I didn’t feel like doing it. The reason being, I wanted to build assets, rather than working on things I need to do daily. Don’t get me wrong, I still want to build assets, but I in the mean time, I still have to do my daily stuff. My thoughts toward building assets over whelm my thinking towards the daily stuff, that I needed to re-evaluate my previous thinking, and to prove to myself, that doing the daily stuff will Help Towards building assets in the long term. As I change my thinking, my actions automatically change.

Immediately, I felt liberated and taking the necessary action became easy. Try it, notice what you have been thinking about a certain issue. It could be difficulty in saving. What have you been telling yourself? Perhaps, you told yourself, “I’d to it later”, or I don’t have enough to save. Change that thought. Even if you can just save $5 a month, do that and start thinking that you did it, and you would put aside more, next week. As you continue to do so, eventually your action will form the habits and saving money will no longer be a problem. Then do it in another area of your finances.

After a while, write and tell me about it to encourage others.
