Are You Really Serious About Your Dreams?
The Power of Dreams. Does this tagline sound familiar to you? It is the tagline that Honda Motor uses. I’m pretty sure, you know the power of having dreams. Dreams are an ideal picture in the mind, of a future that’s yet to materialize, a destiny, if you will.
Last week, a colleague and I, were doing a role play to try out a new presentation. It was a routine role play to sharpen our presentation and listening skills. Our role play was about wealth creation. I took the role of a prospective client, repeating what an earlier client said. My colleague, let’s call her Eliza, probed further to ask me, what I meant by having wealth creation? So, out of the blue, I just said I wanted to retire by the age of 45. She then asked how much I need, in order to retire at 45. Again, pretending to be a hard case client, I just said I didn’t know. If it happens, it happens. In reality, I don’t subscribe to this line of thoughts, but just for the role play I said it.
Now the question that really put me in a spot and I was cornered. “Are you really serious about your dreams?†This is the question I would like to put forth to you too because this little question really got me into a serious state of mind. Earlier on, I was being non-committal and rather playful. I’m sharing this because I believe most of us are not that serious about our dreams, or feel a bit shy to tell people our true dreams.
The next question Eliza asked, floored me. “If you are serious about your dream and really want it, there must be a dollar amount that you have thought of. What is that figure?â€
If we are honest about it, I think most of us know in our heart, approximately how much money we need to make our dreams a reality. If not, a few simple calculations would probably give you that figure. The trouble is, most of us don’t believe it can happen, and/or are not serious enough about their own dreams. That is why we are afraid to say it out. But I think you have to be able to say it out loud and not feel shy about your dreams. You might need someone to help ask those questions sincerely, in order to help you think and verbalize it.
Try this over the next few days. Look for an opportunity to ask a friend or your partner what is their dreams. After they have finished, do you feel you are convinced they are serious about it? Tell them. Then switch position and share your dreams with them. Ask them to tell you honestly, whether they are convinced your really believe in your dreams. At the same time, notice also if you have any emotions attached to the way you describe it? Are you excited about it. Does it resonate in your heart and being? If it does, you will know that is what you really want. If on the other hand, you feel either neutral or don’t feel any emotion at all, perhaps you might want to spend some time to find out what you really want. Be honest with yourself.
As a close, here is something to inspire you. In the bible, the book of Mark, the story of the father of a demon possessed child asking if you (Jesus) can do anything to help. The father was also short on believing. He believed in his head, but in his heart, he had not accepted that Jesus can heal his son yet. Mark 9:23-24 “If you can?†said Jesus. “Everything is possible for him who believes.†…â€I do believe; help me overcome my unbeliefâ€
We too, have to overcome our unbelief.
